The Patch test assesses the tolerance to a product applied on skin. It is performed under control of a dermatologist MD, either under occlusive or semi-occlusive conditions depending on the type of product; the duration of the exposure is 48 hours; twenty volunteers are included in each study.

The readout is redness of the skin on the applied zone, as a marker of the irritant potential of the product.
